Some states and cities also require employers to pay workers who show up to work but are sent home without clocking any hours, said Todd Wulffson, a partner at management-side firm CDF Labor Law LLP. "They put the onus on the employer to notify employees that no work is available," he said. On the other hand, employers have broad leeway to require workers to report for duty during hazardous natural events, unless the government warns against travel, Wulffson said. "The employee can rely on a generalized notice from the government saying it's too dangerous to go out," he said. "Absent that, it really comes down to the individual employee and their circumstances."
