CDF History
Over 30 Years of Protecting and Defending California Employers
For more than three decades, CDF has been devoted to protecting and defending employers with workforces across California. Founded in 1994 by former AmLaw 100 attorneys, the firm was created to meet the unique legal needs of companies operating in California’s challenging employment law environment. CDF partners with employers of all sizes to navigate compliance, mitigate risk, and resolve disputes—providing practical guidance and strong legal defense in matters ranging from day-to-day counsel to high-stakes litigation.
Today, CDF is recognized as a preeminent, award-winning labor and employment defense law firm. With over 50 attorneys across five statewide offices, the firm is consistently ranked among the top in California for its deep experience, responsive service, and litigation success. CDF continues to lead with a client-focused approach, delivering strategic solutions that protect businesses and promote effective workforce management.
From the beginning, CDF’s founding partners envisioned a law firm that delivered faster decision-making, creative pricing models, flexible staffing, and proactive case management. They emphasized client education and a collaborative approach—elements that set CDF apart from traditional firms.
Founders Marie DiSante and Timothy Freudenberger sought to build a firm that was as entrepreneurial as the businesses they served—practicing not only as skilled attorneys but as strategic business partners. Drawing on their experience at leading AmLaw 100 firms, they launched CDF with offices in Orange County, Los Angeles, and San Jose, establishing a statewide presence from day one.
Many of the firm’s original clients continue to work with CDF today, a testament to the enduring strength of its founding vision and client-first philosophy.

How it all started.
CDF’s story began in 1994 with six attorneys and five staff members who shared a vision: to build a law firm focused exclusively on representing employers in California. Rather than pursue rapid expansion, the founding team prioritized steady, intentional growth aligned with client needs and California’s evolving business climate.
Their approach paid off. Within a few years, CDF had established a footprint across key regions of the state, opening offices in Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego to meet clients where they operated.
What started as a bold idea has grown into a trusted statewide practice, grounded in long-standing relationships, consistent service, and a deep commitment to California employers.
